Last week Heather and I had the pleasure of visiting Eli Zabar’s famed rooftop garden on the Upper East Side. I’ll venture to say that it’s the largest and most extensive rooftop garden in NYC. It was even grander than I imagined. Spanning multiple rooftops on both sides of the street, two men work fulltime to maintain the crops on close to an acre. The majority of the plants are housed under greenhouses. Blueberry plants and fig trees find a home outside. I dream of such healthy and robust fig trees on our rooftop. I really wanted to ask for a cutting that I could transplant. Though we have some major wind issues with which we have to contend so I’m not sure if we can fulfill my dream.
